Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity at Nevill Road Junior School

Our PE, Sport and Physical Activity Intent: At Nevill Road Junior School we intend to provide children with a high-quality physical education curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We believe all children can achieve in PE , and teach for secure and deep understanding of skills for a variety of sports and activities in manageable steps. We have the same high expectations for all learners, including those with SEND in PE and sport  The attached provision map shows what PE looks like for all leaners at Nevill Road Junior School.  We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • be physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • be fit and healthy and understand the importance of this for their physical and mental well-being.
  • engage in competitive sports and activities.

Over the past 6 years, Nevill Road Junior school have recieved many awards in recognition of our commitment to Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity. These include the Stockport Sport Award, The SHAPES award for providing opprtunities for children to stay active during lockdown and for Inclusion. Nevill Road Juniors have swept the board bringing away 6 trophies in total, at the Stockport School's awards 2022. We have also been crowned the winning school of the Commitment to Leadership & Volunteering and Commitment to Sporting Competition.   Our sports teams recently won the Transition Athletics and SEND Sports Hall Athletics. The school was also won the Stockport Rounders, Hockey & Girls' Cricket competitons We are delighted to announce that Nevill Road Juniors  have once again achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated
by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. We have also been awarded the afPE Quality Mark Award 2023 - 2026 for the following reasons:

Staff CPD, particularly games, is good and based on an excellent model which supports staff to develop over time.
TA’s and other adults are used effectively to help scaffold learning and support children to become more independent, competent and confident learners.
Pupils are willing to challenge themselves in order to improve and are not afraid to have a go at something new.
There is outstanding provision for competition and many children across a wide range of ability, including the least and most able, PP, & SEND, have experience of representing the school.
The subject is enthusiastically supported by HT, Governors, staff and pupils who all value the contribution that PESSPA makes to a healthy lifestyle.

We are incredibly proud of these achievements and would like to say a huge thank you to the children, staff and parents who have made this possible!
